Aquatic therapy is the use of water and its properties to perform therapeutic exercise and treatment. The water's buoyancy helps support your weight, decreases stress on your joints and is an excellent form of rehabilitation helping to increase your mobility, strength and flexibility. Performed with the help of a physical therapist, aqua therapy can be beneficial for patients who are in pain and/or recovering from an injury. Unlike exercise outside of the water, this type of therapy challenges balance without the fear of falling and provides a natural resistance.

Individuals suffering from the following conditions often find that aquatic therapy is their best form of treatment:

  • Arthritis
  • Chronic back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Obesity
  • Stroke

Our physical therapists are specially trained in aquatic therapy, and the program is conveniently offered at the Y in Abingdon as part of the UM Rehabilitation Network at Upper Chesapeake Health.
