Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR-CT) Analysis

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. CAD develops when the arteries to the heart become narrowed or blocked. Thiss can lead to a reduction in blood flow to the heart and cause chest pain, heart attacks and even death. Despite being the most common form of heart disease, CAD is not always easily diagnosed with many of the non-invasive tests available today..

UM Upper Chesapeake Health is advancing the diagnosis of CAD with the Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR-CT) Analysis. This test takes the results obtained from a regular CT scan of your heart and uses a complex computer program to analyze the information. It creates a 3-D model of your coronary arteries and enables physicians to clearly see whether artery narrowing or blockages are impacting blood flow to your heart.

FFR-CT is very accurate and can help determine whether you would benefit from a cardiac catheterization or bypass surgery. FFR-CT can also benefit those who are experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath but who have not been diagnosed with heart disease.

Benefits of FFR-CT

  • Provides a detailed map of blood flow through your coronary artery, identifying blockages
  • Is a non-invasive procedures and poses no risks
  • Reduces the need for follow-up testing and helps your doctor best determine your plan of care
