When This Medicine Should Not Be Used

How to Use This Medicine


  • Take your medicine as directed.
  • For chemotherapy: Take this medicine 1 hour before the start of your chemotherapy session. Aprepitant is normally given once a day for 3 days in a row, beginning on the first day of cancer treatment.
  • For surgery: Aprepitant is given within 3 hours before surgery.
  • Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Do not use this medicine together with cisapride or pimozide.
  • Some foods and medicines can affect how aprepitant works. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
    • Diltiazem, rifampin, tolbutamide
    • Blood thinner medicine (such as warfarin), cancer medicine (such as ifosfamide, imatinib, irinotecan, vinblastine, vincristine), depression medicine (such as nefazodone, paroxetine), HIV/AIDS medicine (such as nelfinavir, ritonavir), infection medicine (such as clarithromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, troleandomycin), sedative medicine (such as alprazolam, midazolam, triazolam), seizure medicine (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin), or steroid medicine (such as dexamethasone, methylprednisolone)

Warnings While Using This Medicine

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have liver disease.
  • Birth control pills may not work as well while you are taking aprepitant. Use a second form of birth control while you are taking this medicine and for 1 month after your last dose.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Burning, peeling skin rash
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite
  • Hiccups
  • Tiredness or weakness
